SEURAT-1 Cluster

SEURAT-1 logo.COSMOS is one of seven projects forming the SEURAT-1 cluster.

SEURAT is a European research initiative with the long-term goal of achieving “Safety Evaluation Ultimately Replacing Animal Testing”.

In a first step, SEURAT-1 (Towards the replacement of in vivo repeated dose systemic toxicity testing) will iteratively develop an innovative concept for repeated dose systemic toxicity testing based on the research work carried out by six research projects:

SCR&Tox: Stem Cells for Relevant efficient extended and normalized Toxicology.

SCR&Tox aims at making use of human pluripotent stem cell lines to provide in vitro assays for predicting toxicity of pharmaceutical compounds and cosmetic ingredients.


HeMiBio: Hepatic Microfluidic Bioreactor.

HeMiBio aims at developing a device that simulates the complex structure of the human liver, thus providing the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industry with a standardised tool for preclinical toxicity testing.

DETECTIVE will set up a screening pipeline of high content, high throughput as well as classical functional and "-omics" technologies to identify and investigate human biomarkers in cellular models for repeated dose in vitro testing.

NOTOX will explore and establish beyond the state-of-the-art techniques based on systems biology approach using “-omics” to establish causal predictive models for long term toxicity using human relevant test systems.

Supporting integrated data analysis and servicing of alternative testing methods in toxicology

ToxBank establishes a dedicated web-based warehouse for toxicity data management and modelling, a "gold standards" compound database and repository of selected test compounds, and a reference resource for cells, cell lines and tissues of relevance for in vitro systemic toxicity research carried out across the SEURAT-1 cluster.
